The historic decision by the UN's International Court of Justice (ICJ) that Israel may be violating the genocide convention is a victory for the Palestinian people, and Global South as a whole.

I have to apologize for the comments of our foreign minister Melanie Joly. She has no qualifications for her position. She is our seventh foreign minister in less than ten years. Her appointment has everything to do with a gender parity cabinet and here personal connection to the PM. She presides in a lackluster government deeply unpopular in the country.
Canada is as complicit as the US in this genocide as we are a vassal state to the empire and our blind support and military connections to Israel are deeply entrenched.

The ICJ court decision is important, but means little considering that Israel has never obeyed any previous decisions against it, though it does give weight to everyone watching in disgust as Israel murders women and children. Actually, the ICJ decision would have more weight if it were against the US. What has change for the court, Israel and the world is that the entire world is watching this genocide take place. It has thoroughly destroyed any credibility that Israel and the US ever had!
When setting up legal instruments, such as the ICJ, in the period after WW2, the leaders of the historic settler-colonial states, like the UK, France and US only ever intended to use them to control/exploit leaders in the Global South. They never envisaged using them to prosecute one of their own. For the US and UK, among others, to try to ignore this ruling and continue to allow the psychopathic leaders of Israel a free-hand in its genocidal campaign, while also continuing to fund and arm this campaign, will confirm what the countries of the Global South already understand; the international rules based order is judeo-christian colonialism and its incipient white supremacy by another name, and will only be enforced by the US, UK etc when it is in their wealth and power interests to do so. The moment the ICJ and other agencies for international law find against the settler-colonialists or their proxies, their rulings will he ignored and delegitimised by organised state campaigns of manufactured consent, typically led by the client-media and social media platforms. Future efforts to prosecute despots not aligned with Western interests will founder because they will simply cite the precedent being set by currently.

But true, the very fact that the learned judges kinda, sorta criticised Israel, is some kind of victory, I suppose but I think more importantly is the wider implications of US actions following the decision, the first being the US withdrawing from the UNWRA and no doubt more to follow as the decision is more of a defeat for the US than it is for Israel (that doesn't give a shit anyway). I get the sense that the US will slam the drawbridge shut and hunker down as they say. We are entering extremely dangerous times, cornered rats do desperate things to survive.
