As European I think that Macron had to do so, for the historical not US friendly position of France when it comes to Foreign POlitics. Just remember Chirac after the fake 9/11 set up by NeoCon. He wasn't as much stupid and unaware as most of all idiots that ruined our beloved Europe.
And you have to put in count that Macron is in a delicate position with his peopeple after that illegitimate move on retirement age.

1. Macron's words are totally insincere. He is a pathological liar who, in China, simply wanted to distance himself from Mrs. von der Leyen - one of the most corrupt people in Europe. But in substance, he is absolutely on the same wavelength as this lady, i.e. at the behest of the United States.
2. Europe is not America's vassal but its lackey. The notion of vassalage implies another notion that all European leaders, like those of America too, ignore: honor.
3. It should be remembered that the construction of Europe was done according to the model desired by Jean Monnet, who was sponsored by the United States. In other words, by construction, Europe is at the orders of the United States and all the current European leaders have been formatted for this, Macron being the first.
So Macron talks for the gallery but will not act: he will do what Washington tells him to do. Alas!
The tragedy of Europe is that in January of 2022 NATO member states allowed themselves to be coerced into the proxy war against Russia which would obviously result in the disaster we are seeing now. If the 29 member states led by Germany, France and Italy vetoed the war it would have been a huge first step toward European sovereignty, as it is they have made a bad situation worse and the US has an iron grip on a vastly weakened Europe.
The war has taken the measure of how deeply Europe has been colonized and now can be considered "Euroamerica". If Macron wanted to make a move for European sovereignty he missed his golden moment over a year ago, and everything he does now is a dead ended. I wonder if he is even aware of his lost opportunity to bring about real change?
It is pathetic to see the spectacle of how European/NATO leaders have so profoundly betrayed their populations. NATO that was supposed protect Europe but has been instrumental in its destruction.
It is also pathetic Eastern European countries see Russia as a threat when it wants peace as much as they do. Neither Russia or China want war. It is a very dangerous world when so many gullible millions buy into American propaganda, coercion and extortion.
